First grade is an exciting experience and year consisting of many "firsts." First graders have their first spelling tests and introduction to formal math instruction. They also learn to be more independent and responsible. Our first-grade experience will help every child grow in their faith and become life-long learners. The second-grade year at Bishop Reicher is a memorable one both spiritually and academically. Students experience the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time. Students learn about forgiveness and begin to understand the meaning of sin, sorrow, and reconciliation.
Academically, students will master addition and subtraction, along with concepts of time, measurement, and money. The students are introduced to length, perimeter, and area and exploring fractional parts, with great emphasis being placed on higher-level critical thinking skills.
Second graders become increasingly independent in their reading activities. Word and comprehension skills continue to be emphasized. Many grammar concepts are introduced, and students are encouraged to write frequently in their journals. The purpose of these journals enables your child to become writing and expressing thoughts and ideas.

Students in third grade will transition from primary to elementary school activities. The focus is placed on the student's ability to function independently from teacher instruction and rely more on their own skills. Students hone their reading, writing, and problem-solving skills through a variety of classroom experiences. Number sense, fact fluency, and mathematical reasoning continue to be emphasized in the math classroom. Students develop map reading skills through a social studies curriculum that focuses on globes and physical, political, and thematic maps. By completing sequential science investigations, students are introduced to fundamental concepts in earth science and explore the natural and human-made worlds.
